Mrs. Alice Mellen passed away Wednesday night at 11 o'clock at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Douglas D. Mansfield, 304 Fourth avenue. Mrs. Mellen had been ill for the past year and three weeks ago suffered an attack of heart trouble. She was removed from her home, 341 First avenue, to the home of Mrs. Mansfield, who faithfully nursed her mother until the time of Mrs. Mellen's death. Funeral services will be held at 3 o'clock Friday afternoon at the Methodist church, Rev. C. L. Nye officiating. Interment will be in Springdale cemetery.
Mrs. Mellen was born in Lancashire, England, August 31, 1841. In 1869 she came to this country with her husband and children and settled at Pittston, Pa. Following the death of her husband, she moved to Clinton in 1876, where she resided ever since. Mrs. Mellen was a woman of untiring energy and devotion to the welfare of her family, her friends and her church. She was left a widow with six children by the death of her husband, who was killed in a coal mine at Pittston, when the eldest of the children was 11 years.
For years she worked, and planned, and struggled for the welfare and advancement, and lived to see them all grow to man and womanhood, and as a result of her energy and work, she was able to spend the latter part of her life in comparative ease and satisfaction. Imbued with sound, old fashioned ideas, to whom the modern fads and fashions made no appeal, she will be greatly missed by her children, her neighbors and her life-long friends.
There are left to mourn her death six children: Mrs. H. E. Oates of Peoria, Ill., James Mellen of Los Angeles, Jonathan Mellen of Omaha, Thomas Mellen of Clinton, Mrs. D. D. Mansfield of Clinton and George Mellen of Clinton. All of the children will be here for the funeral, except James Mellen of Los Angeles, who will be unable to attend.
