Petersville, Ia. May 31--The death of James McDonald, an old and respected resident of this place, occurred at his home at noon Wednesday. He had been ailing some time with the infirmities of old age, but was confined to his bed about a week. He was conscious almost to the last, and was well fortified and comforted in his last hours by the rites of the Catholic church, of which he was a devout and faithful member.
The deceased was about 87 years of age, was born in Ireland and came to Canada when a young man, and settled on a farm near Petersville in '50s. He was united in marriage to Miss Julia Watters, who preceded him in death only about five months ago.
Mr. McDonald was a man of very cheerful nature, a kind husband and father, and a staunch friend and neighbor. By his industry and frugal habits he had acquired a good measure of this world's goods, a fine farm, where he resided until about 15 years ago, when he retired to this place to spend the remainder of his days in a well earned rest. He will be greatly missed by a large number of relatives and friends.
The immediate members of his family left to mourn are Mrs. Mary Kirkpatrick of Denver, Colo.; Martin and Mrs. Mont O'Meara of this place; Mrs. John Costello of Charlotte, and John of Delmar, besides a sister, Mrs. McCullough of Vail, Iowa, and a number of grandchildren.
The funeral occurred Friday morning at 9 o'clock at Immaculate Conception church. A large concourse of friends and relatives followed the remains from the home to the church, where a solemn mass of requiem was celebrated by Rev. D. J. Ryan, pastor, assisted by Rev. W. Reilly of Delmar and Rev. T. O'Dowd of Charlotte. Rev. Father Ryan delivered a very touching sermon---speaking of the deceased's heartfelt and humble practice of his religious belief.
The pall bearers were John O'Meara, Michael Costello, Dennis Heenan, John Watters, Hugh Hanrahan and A. J. Mallon.
The following from a distance were in attendance at the funeral: Raymond Kirkpatrick of Chicago; Mrs. McCullough and daughter of Vail, Iowa; Misses Nellie and Josephine Trony, Clinton; Mrs. Ann McGinn, Lyons; and Miss Rose Burke, Clinton.
