One of the sweetest souls that God ever called from the land of shadows to the land of sunlight answered Him when Mrs. Allen fell asleep yesterday afternoon at her home on Fifth avenue.
Wise, Tactful and tender, as it is given to few to be, her service to the world has been a royal one.
Even after failing health forced her to abandon outside activities, her beautiful life went on, a comfort, an inspiration, a benediction to those who came within its influence -- an influence under which "souls to higher levels rise," for hers was a knightly spirit that would "speak no slander, no, nor listen to it," that would plead for the motive against the action, and ever from her generous thoughts she wove the mantle of sweet charity.
To those in sorrow her loving heart went out, not in an impulse that ends in forgetting, but in persistent kindnesses that carried healing with them.
For a long time she had known that the journey before her was a short one, but her smile was never missing, her cheerfulness never failed; her courage never wavered. "I wanted to leave them for a memory," she said once to a friend who was wondering at her fortitude.
The best of wives, the dearest, tenderest of mothers, the kindest of sisters, a matchless friend, a safe counsellor, the world is better and brighter for her passing through it, for every one whose life touched hers.
"Welcome her tenderly beautiful angels,
She is so dear."
Susan Parthenia Edwards was born at Windsor, in the state of New York and there was married to Mr. L. P. Allen in 1861. She came with her husband to Clinton in 1868, where they have since resided.
She worked long and faithfully for the Presbyterian church of which she was a member. Besides her interests there she has been identified with every good work of the city especially with Agatha Hospital so dear to her heart, and was the secretary of its managing board for many years. She was an honorary member of two literary clubs.
Mrs. Allen has been failing in health for a long time, but deeply attached to her beautiful and happy home she was unwilling to leave its shelter for the uncertain comforts of health resorts. About ten days ago alarming symptoms of heart trouble developed, but she rallied and she seemed to be steadily improving. Yesterday she joined her family at breakfast, expressed herself as having slept well, and feeling much better. After luncheon as she lay upon a lounge reading a magazine, she fell into a gentle sleep. Her eldest daughter entering the room about half-past two found that she had sleeping, passed away with a smile upon her face.
One beloved child preceded her to the other world. They remain to miss the blessing of her presence, her husband, her two daughters, her sisters, Mrs. C. E. Wright, Mrs. E. A. Wadleigh and Miss A. L. Edwards and many many friends. Notice of funeral later.

Sunday afternoon occurred the funeral service of Mrs. L. P. Allen and a large company of friends and neighbors assembled to pay their last respects to her. There was a wealth of floral offerings from her friends and from the Tuesday and Sunoida clubs, the D. A. R. and Agatha hospital. Rev. J. K. Fowler officiated and after the service introduced Rev. J. G. Lowden of Polo, Ill, Mrs. Allen's first pastor in Clinton who gave a loving tribute to her life of love and labor in the church.
A. R. Olney had charge of the funeral arrangements and the pall bearers were: Messrs. George M. and Chas. F. Curtis, J. A. Leonard, S. Shoecraft, C. E. Armstrong, and Geo. W. Allen. Interment was made at Springdale.
