DEATH ON THE RAIL

C. W. WILSON INSTANTLY KILLED
YESTERDAY

His Body Frightfully Lacerated
How the Accident Occurred
Coroner’s Inquest

C. W. Wilson, a brakeman in the employ of C. N. & W. Railway Company, met death in a horrible manner at the Fifth Street crossing about noon yesterday.

Just how the accident happened is at present unknown to the general public, as the principal witness to the accident is out of the city.

The unfortunate man had been called out on a special and was down in the yards where the train was being made up. A few seconds before the accident some of the men in the yard noticed Wilson standing on the track near a switch, the next minute the man was under the wheels of a switch engine No. 265, which had backed down upon him.

No one appears to have observed Wilson in time to warn him of approaching danger, and it is presumed owing to the confusion and noise of several engines in the vicinity, he did not observe the nearness of the approaching engine until it was too late to escape.

Life was found extinct when the body was reached by several switchmen in the yard, and Coroner Meyers was at once notified. The left leg was literally cut in pieces and the body was otherwise mutilated. The remains were taken to the undertaking establishment of F. Sutton & Son.

The deceased was about thirty years of age and had been married about six weeks. He had a pleasant little house at 1224 Eighth Street and was universally popular among all who knew him.

Owing to the absence of the principal witness from the city the coroner will not hold an inquest until the evening. The following jurors have been summoned: Chas. Seitz, Thos. Tierney, and Peter Matzan.
