Ashton Carsten "Mike" Hanniford, 74, went to be with the Lord on Friday, February 3, 2017 at the Iowa Veterans Home (IVH). "Sonny" as he was known to his family in South Carolina, was born on August 16, 1942 in Kingstree, SC, to the late John Henry Hanniford and Gladys (Feagin) Hanniford. "Cowboy", as he became known at the IVH, was never far from his beloved cowboy hat and boots. He was a man of many names, who enjoyed his journey and loved his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Mike served his country honorably with the United States Navy from 1960 to 1963; he received his honorable discharge from the Naval Reserve in 1966. A retired member of Ironworker's Local #111, Rock Island, Illinois he was a certified master welder. Mike enjoyed his union brotherhood, deep friendships, and erecting projects that still stand today.
Besides his family, Mike had a passion for horses. Mike and his sons spent countless hours in the saddle breaking horses and enjoying weekend trail rides. As well, for years he volunteered his time at the Three Hills Rodeo, in Bernard IA, with his good friend David Morehead. Mike also enjoyed farming, raising a variety of animals, and growing large gardens that he would generously share. He was an avid hunter and fisherman; spending time on his large pond, on the river, and camping. "Grandpa" cherished his time with his grandchildren sharing his love of horses and fishing as a way to teach and bond.
He is survived by his former wife, Peggy Hanniford of Dubuque, IA, his long-time companion, Marla Wilcox of Delmar, IA, his sons Michael and daughter-in-law Cheryl (Hoffman) Hanniford of Altoona, IA, Patrick and daughter-in-law Jennifer (Juergens) Hanniford of Dubuque, IA. He was the proud grandfather of Claire, Isabella, Will, Olivia, and Kate Hanniford. In addition, he is survived by his sisters, Florence Byrdic, Margaret Tisdale, Louetta Williams and brother Joe Hanniford. He is preceded in death by many older brothers.
In lieu of a visitation, the family will honor Mike with a burial that will occur in a private ceremony at a later date. The family of Mike would like to thank his caregivers at the Iowa Veterans Home for their kind and loving care and requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Iowa Veterans Home (http://ivh.iowa.gov.) or the Alzheimer's Association (alz.org). - See more at: http://obituaries.clintonherald.com/story/ashton-hanniford-1942-2017-873236622#sthash.YBuwfx5x.dpuf
