Charles A, Smith, son of Col. J. H. Smith, of Camanche was born in Clinton County, in September 1852. His early boyhood was passed on the farm of his father, in Center Township. Here he received a common school education, after which he was sent to the Iowa State Agricultural College, where he continued until he graduated, in 1872. He came to Clinton, and entered the office of Hayes & Young, as a law student, where he spent a season in hard study, and from whence he was admitted to the bar. Mr. Smith has built up a very successful law business in this district, and was quite a favorite among the gentlemen of the Clinton bar. Six years ago he was appointed a deputy collector of the Internal Revenue under Major Farwell, and filled the position to the full satisfaction of all, up until the time of his death.

Mr.Smith was an honored member of the Ancient Order of United Workmen.

The funeral took place from the family residence on Fourth Avenue, under the supervision of the Clinton Lodge No. 7. A. O. U. W., with services by Rev. Jas. Trimble.

By the death of Mr. Charles A. Smith, the government loses an efficient officer, the Clinton bar a promising young lawyer, and Clinton a respected and valuable citizen. The sympathy of the entire community are with the bereaved wife, orphan, and grief stricken parents.
