Death on the Rail
Frank J. Dale, well-known and highly respected in this community, met with an accident Saturday, which caused his death. It seems in making a coupling he got between the dead-woods of the car, in such a manner that he was crushed, and severely injured in several places, and his ribs were broken and pierced his vitals. He was taken out of the jaws of death, which had too surely done their work, and transferred with care to the Depot, where he lay in great pain. After he had been given a drink of water, and was fixed as comfortably as the circumstances would permit, he was put on the train and taken to Cedar Rapids, where the best surgical assistance was rendered. But he was beyond the reach of human assistance, and Monday morning he breathed his last. Frank had many warm friends here to whom this news comes like a pall. He was at the time of his death about 23 years old, and had been running but a short time. His mother resides in New York City, and was appraised of the sad news of her son, by telegraph. Deceased was a nephew of W. D. Walden, Esq., of this city, and when in Clinton resided with his cousin, Mrs. Jno. Gabriel. The remains were brought to this city on the express train, and forwarded to New York City, to be interred in the family lot in Greenwood Cemetery, the hearts of mother and sister to mourn his loss.
