G.M. "Doc" Solberg DVM of Clinton, peacefully passed away at the age of 85 on January 7, 2017 at Big Meadows Nursing Home, Special Connections Unit in Savanna, IL with family at his side. A celebration of life will be held for friends and family from 1 - 4pm on Saturday, January 21, 2017, at Pape Funeral Home 2308 Pershing Blvd in Clinton, IA. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to either The Connections Special Care Unit at Big Meadows or to the G.M. Solberg Wildlife Rescue, which two of his granddaughters have started in his honor. Online condolences may be left at www.papefh.com
Doc was born on April 14, 1931, in Cylinder IA, to Oscar and Minnie (Nordby) Solberg. He graduated from Armstrong High School, Armstrong, IA. He then honorably served his country in the U.S. Army. When he returned from the service, he went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree and then his Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from Iowa State University, graduating in 1963. While attending college, Doc and Delores (Wall) were united in marriage on May 10, 1958 at St. Andrews Lutheran Church in Ames, IA.
He founded Ambassador Animal Hospital in 1964 and then became truly dedicated to the care of all animals. He would have worked 24/7 if he could have, and sometimes he did. This left little time for hobbies although occasionally he could be found at the Fulton Country Club early in the morning, before work, chasing a little white ball. Doc and Delores did take some time to travel but it was hard to get Doc away from work. They have to be the only couple ever to go to Poland for the weekend!
Doc is survived by his wife Delores Solberg of Clinton; three children, Scott (Leslie) Solberg of Clinton and their children, Heather Kerens from Ames IA, Dylan, Morgan and Lyndsi (Adam) Frahm and their children, Hunter and Forrest, all from Clinton, IA, Susan Solberg of Melborne FL; Jason (Rorie) Solberg of Corvallis, OR and their children, Mason, Jacob and Chloe, all from Corvallis, OR; and his sister, Aloah Welp from Marshalltown, IA. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and one brother.
The Solberg family would like to extend special thanks to the staff of Big Meadows for their excellent care of Doc, in mind, body, and spirit. - See more at: http://obituaries.clintonherald.com/story/g-m-doc-solberg-1931-2017-865132582#sthash.RGYa4GBR.dpuf
