DIED
Suddenly, at his residence in Hampshire Township, Monday morning, May 11th, Mr. Lewis F. Rogers, in his 80th year.

He had been feeble for years, some of the time helpless, and was kept in good condition only by the most constant care. At 3:30 in the morning he was awake, complaining a little of fullness in the chest; and when Mrs. Roger’s arose at 6:50 seemed to be sleeping calmly as usual. At 8:30 she went to his room to call and assist him to dress, and found him dead, lying in the most natural position, as though his life’s clock had stopped while he was asleep.

Mr. Rogers was born at Coburg, Canada on March 18th, 1817; was married at Whitney, Canada, in December, 1835-the couple passing their 60th anniversary last winter. They came to this vicinity in the fall of ’45 and soon settled upon the land on which they have lived ever since. They had nine children – losing one, Jane, infancy, and Mrs. Josephine Kelly, who died a number of years ago. Mrs. Rogers survives him, with two sons, H. A. of Ruthven and B. L. of Hampshire; and five daughters, Mrs. F. H. Teed and Mrs. E. C. Rowell of Ruthven, Mrs. George B. Davids of Sanborn, Mrs. George W. Hill of Jewell Junction, and Mrs. J. M. Draper of Sioux County.

The son and daughter from Ruthven, and Messrs. Michael and Edward Kelly, son-in-law and grandson, of Oregon, Ill., arrived early for the funeral, which was held Thursday afternoon, Rev. C. W. Tyler conducting services, with burial in Oakland.

Mr. Rogers was one of the mist honest, substantial, reliable farmers of Iowa - careful, industrious, kindly and helpful; a man for whom we desire to express our increasing regard throughout an acquaintance of thirty-five years. His race was well run, his work well done, and his end gratefully peaceful and painless.
