Helen C. Smith, 101, of Waterloo, IA passed away on December 15 at Allen Hospital, Waterloo. She was born October 2, 1915 in Clinton, daughter of Karl H. and Jennie F. Cook Boegel, Sr. She graduated as valedictorian from Clinton High School in 1933, was initiated into Phi Beta Kappa in her senior year at the University of Iowa and received her BA degree cum laude in 1937. She met her future husband, D. Berkeley Smith there and they were married May 8, 1938 at the First Presbyterian Church, Sioux City after her first year of teaching in Dunlap, IA High School. They spent 73 years in a loving Christian marriage before his death on August 10, 2011.
Helen retired in 1980 after 21 memorable years of teaching Latin and English at Waterloo West High School. One of those highlights came in 1980 when she was named Honorary Prom Queen. She loved her profession and students. After her retirement, she did some tutoring and taught creative writing at the Center for the Arts. Education was a high priority in her life she was a bibliophile and a lifelong learner.
She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, the Cedar Valley Order of the Eastern Star, a 50-plus year member of the AAUW and Delta Kappa Gamma, a life member of the University of Iowa Alumni and of WEA and ISEA. Her interests were her family, travelling, flying with her pilot husband in their Luscombe plane, reading, and taking post-graduate courses.
Her survivors include her son, Major General D. Bruce Smith, USAF Retired (Suzanne), San Antonio, TX; daughter, Bonnie (Roger) Smith Davis, Waterloo; granddaughters, Robin (Keith) Smith-Tenen and Heather (Joey) Andrade of West Pam Beach, FL; great-grandchildren, Tyler and Allison Andrade; step-grandson, Patrick (Beth) Baughan of Las Vegas, NV; step-great grandchildren Aidan and Ella Baughan; brothers, Robert Boegel of Clinton and Karl Boegel, Jr., of Clinton and Cumberland, WI; sister-in-law Karagay Boegel (Bill Stovall), Cumberland, WI; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death are her parents, husband, brothers, Donald Boegel and wife Alice; Herbert Boegel and wife Frances; sisters-in-law Jean and Janet Boegel; and sister, Florence Sheffield and husband, Phil.
In addition to her beloved family and dear neighbors, Helens family wishes to thank Donna Wirtz and Sue Harris for years of exceptional friendship and care. They would also like to thank Dr. John Musgrave, Allen Hospital, and Unity Point Hospice for their compassionate care.
Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, December 29, 2016 at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1301 Kimball Avenue, Waterloo, IA, with burial at Waterloo Cemetery. Friends may call one hour before service time at the church. A reception will be held at the church after the ceremony followed by graveside interment. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to a charity of the donors choice. Condolences may be left at www.LockeFuneralHome.com. Locke Funeral Home of Waterloo is in charge of arrangements.
