Merline J. Jess, 89 of Camanche, passed away Tuesday, November 1, 2016 at Mercy Living Center South. In following Merline’s wishes, cremation rites have been accorded. A private service will be held. The Pape Funeral Home is assisting the family. Merline was born in Camanche on August 10, 1927, the daughter of Merlin L. and Viola M. (Hugunin) Iliff. She graduated from Clinton High School. Merline married Carl Jess on May 11, 1946 in Chicago. Carl passed away on May 14, 2008. Merlin had been employed at Grants, McLellands, the Clinton Garment Factory and as produce manager at Kopp’s in Camanche. She had been a member of the Camanche Baptist Church, Amvets Auxiliary and a former member of the Loyal Order of Moose. She enjoyed spending time with and going to her grandchildren’s activities, fishing trips to Wisconsin, Minnesota and Michigan, supporting the Camanche Indian teams and going to the casino. She was a great cook, an avid Chicago Cub fan, and followed the Iowa Hawkeye’s. Merline is survived by two children; Douglas (Betty) Jess and Jane (Lenny) Beal both of Camanche; 6 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren and a brother, Joseph (Sharilyn) Iliff of Clinton. She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant son, Thomas; A grandson, Mathew; two brothers and one sister. Online condolences may be left at www.papefh.com.
