Mrs. Anna Rice, 95, of DeWitt, died early Tuesday morning, May 24, 2016, at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf.

Mrs. Rice, the former Anna Adelia Henrietta Hinrichs was born February 28, 1921, at McCausland to Henry and Clara (Hass) Hinrichs. She received a Bachelor’s Degree in Early Education from Marycrest College. Anna married Woodrow Rice April 5, 1941 in Clinton. In addition to raising their three children, Anna began teaching in the late 1930’s in a one-room schoolhouse and later taught in the Camanche and Clinton school districts for forty years, retiring in 1986. Her husband preceded her in death October 18, 1961.

She was a long time active member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ, DeWitt and the Pierman Club. She delivered Meals On Wheels and library books to shut-ins into her 90’s. Anna also belonged to the Clinton County Retired School Personnel and for years prepared lunch for the DeWitt Noon Lions Club. She loved to bake, read, and play cards. Anna cherished the time spent with family and adored her grand and great-grandchildren.

Surviving are children, Warren (Gloria) Rice of St. Louis, Debra (Tony) Leehoven of Ankeny and Kevin (Mary) Rice of Grand Mound; granddaughters, Jennifer Lape, Gretchen (John) Ayres, LeighAnn (Doug) Ruopp, Ashtin (Tyler) Trimble and Courtney (Shawn) Dunnegan; great-grandchildren, Michael, Jake, and Kathryn Lape, Lauren and Sophie Ayres, Drake Ruopp, Hayden and Owen Trimble and Brecken and Greysen Dunnegan.

In addition to her husband, Anna was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Harold, Henry and Robert and two sisters, Viola Hinrichs and Angeline Swarz.

The family will receive friends at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. Thursday, May 26th. A service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 27th at First Congregational UCC, DeWitt. The Rev. Jeff Wartgow will officiate. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery, DeWitt. Memorials are suggested to First Congregational UCC.

Pallbearers will be Michael Lape, John Ayres, Tyler Trimble, Shawn Dunnegan, Doug Ruopp and Michael Hinrichs.
