George R. Current, 76, of Camanche, passed away, Sunday, May 8, 2016 at his home in Camanche.

Services will be 11:30am, Thursday, May 12, 2016 at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church – Camanche. Visitation will be from 9:30am to the service time at the church. A luncheon will follow the services at the church. Donna is requesting casual attire and for all you race fans... racing attire is suggested. There will be no graveside services at this time. The Camanche Chapel Snell-Zornig Funeral Homes & Crematory is in charge of arrangements.

George Ray Current was born on June 12, 1939 in Maquoketa, Iowa, the son of James and Daisy (Wray) Current. He was a 1958 graduate of Maquoketa High School. He served in the United States Army from 1958 to 1961. He married Donna Cross on July 23, 1960 in Maquoketa.
After being discharged from the Army he was employed at Joe Martin Chrysler in Maquoketa and then Watkins Motors in Clinton. He later owned and operated George’s Standard Station in Charlotte, before working in the parts department at Schuler Motors in Morrison, retiring in 2012.
George was a member of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, served on the Camanche City Council for many years, served on the board of directors for the Camanche Historical Society and Rose Hill Cemetery. He served on the Camanche Volunteer Fire Department and the Charlotte Volunteer Fire Department. He enjoyed racing MOPAR engines, winning the world series at Cordova in 1959. He was a former member of the Camanche Jaycees and a member of the Crohns and Colitis Foundation.

George is survived by his wife: Donna; three children: Jeff Current of Tipton, Iowa; Brenda (Joseph) Lundin of Clinton, and George Current II (Kenneth), of Chicago, Illinois; three grandchildren: Salina Case, Jordan Lundin, and Justin Current; his siblings: Jim (Sarah) Current of Maquoketa, Donald (Evelyn) Current of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Donna Said of Maquoketa, Iowa, and Richard (Shirley) Current of Maquoketa, and several nieces and nephews.
George was preceded in death by his parents, his sister: Beverly Durkop, and his brother: Robert Current.

In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to St. Mark’s United Methodist, the Camanche Historical Society, the Camanche Volunteer Fire Department or a charity of your choice.

PS: He enjoyed his morning breakfasts at the Old Town Cafe.
