Helen M. (Mrs. Myron) Workman, 87, of Welton, traveled her final journey to heaven, early Thursday morning, January 28, 2016, at the University of Iowa Hospital, Iowa City.

The family will receive relatives and friends at the United Methodist Church, DeWitt from 9:30 until 11:45 a.m. Monday, February 1, 2016. A funeral service will be held at 12:00 noon in the church with the Rev. Tom Boomershine officiating. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery, DeWitt. The family requests memorials be given to the DeWitt United Methodist Church, DeWitt Community Hospital Foundation, or University of Iowa Palliative Care.

The former Helen Marie Friday was born June 20, 1928, in Cedar County to Louis and Ruth (Bromell) Friday. She graduated from Tipton High School in 1946 where she also tutored students on the flute. Helen was united in marriage to Myron Reed Workman on February 15, 1948, at the Stanwood United Methodist Church. Not only did she retire from Iowa Mutual Insurance Company, but also at the age of 73 ended her 50 plus years as a waitress. She thoroughly enjoyed and loved every person she came in contact with.

As a member of the Stanwood United Methodist Church, Helen served for 20 years as church organist, choir director and established the church men’s quartet. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star for over 50 years, proudly serving along with her husband as a Worthy Matron and Worthy Patron. She also served as the Assistant Mother Advisor of the International Order of Rainbow for Girls, and had the honor of becoming a member of the Grand Cross of Colors. Helen was a 25-year member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

Helen was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She is deeply admired and loved by those left to honor her memory.

Preceding Helen in death were her parents; a daughter, Debi Sickels; a brother-in-law, Leo Havel and sisters-in-law, Hazel Friday and Margaret Workman.

She is survived by her loving husband, Myron with whom she shared 67 years; daughters, Dianna (Richard) Hitchcock of Leesburg, Florida, and children, Randy (Rachael) Hitchcock and Rhonda (Todd) VanZuiden of Bellevue, Melissa (Brad) Steines of Dubuque; Donna (Ronnie) Steward of DeWitt and children, Nikki (Kevin) Roling of DeWitt, Michael (Aundrea) Kennedy of Rock Island, Illinois, Scott (Kristen) Kennedy of Stilwell, Kansas and Tom Kennedy and Mark Steward of DeWitt and Michael (Debbie) Steward of Bremerton, Washington; Debi’s children, Levi Sickels of Volo, Illinois, Logan (Stephanie) Sickels of Poplar Grove, Illinois, and Cory (Becky) Sickels of Cherry Valley, Illinois; and Dawn (Larry) Hand of DeWitt and children, Jessica (Justin) Robertson of Blue Grass and Chad (Alex) Hand of East Peoria, Illinois. Helen’s precious family also includes 27 great-grandchildren, a brother, Robert Friday; a brother-in-law, LaVern Workman; a sister-in-law, Wilma Havel; nieces nephews and cousins.
