Ruth Elizabeth Rost was born on December 24, 1932 in Kenova, West Virginia, the daughter of Fredrick and Mary Madeline (Hensley) Rost. She married Richard Cook on February 4, 1955 in Orange, Texas; he died April 9, 2010.

Ruth was a homemaker who raised 4 children of her own and several foster children over the span of 40 plus years. As the kids got older and a move to the country took place, she transitioned from PTA mom to gentleman farmer taking care of cows, pigs, sheep, chickens and many other critters that showed up. Although, if you weren’t a welcomed critter there was always a pellet gun close at hand. Many a time she could be found chasing down a cow or two that accidentally walked through the fence. She enjoyed playing cards with close friends, throwing an occasional card at the guys when they misbehaved.

Ruth was an avid gardener who took up canning as an Olympic sport. There are still jars of something or another stashed in various spots in the house. She gardened as long as possible with flowers and greenery a common sight around the house and property. If you knew Ruth from years gone by, you can still hear her playing the piano (self taught) or whistling like only she could.

In the face of chronic pain that continually worsened, Ruth maintained a positive and stoic outlook. This was an inspiration to all who knew her and is a testament to her character.

Ruth is survived by her daughter: Susan Christine (Stephen) Hawkins of Chesterfield, Virginia, two sons: David (Karen Houston) Cook of Clinton, and John (Lora) Cook of Appleton, Wisconsin; 10 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren; and one sister: Becky Lyn Ryder of Lake Charles, Louisiana. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a daughter, and a sister.

Memorials can be made to the Christian Appalachian Project P.O. Box 459
 Hagerhill, KY 41222.
