Syslo, Viola Eleanor 1918-2014

Mrs. Viola E. Syslo, 96, of Calamus, passed Tuesday evening, September 30, 2014, at Westwing Place, DeWitt.

Mrs. Syslo, the former Viola Eleanor Gasper was born June 22, 1918, in Lindsay, Nebraska to Nicholas and Mary (Loeffler) Gasper. On October 12, 1940, Viola was united in marriage to Theophil "Ted" Syslo in Fullerton, Nebraska. The couple farmed at rural Calamus for many years. Ted preceded Viola in death on February 20, 1984.

She was a longtime member of Saints Philip and James Catholic Church, Grand Mound, and the altar and rosary society. Vi was a talented musician and artist, playing in the Highway 30 Band for many years and painting many oil paintings for family and friends. She also loved gardening and flowers.

Surviving are children and their spouses, Carolyn and David Mackin of DeWitt, Bob and Mary Syslo of Calamus and Meryl and Vicki Syslo of Minneapolis and a daughter-in-law, Jo Syslo; 15 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, Ted, Viola was preceded in death by a son, LeRoy, her parents, two sisters and six brothers.

The family will receive relatives and friends at Schultz Funeral Home, Grand Mound, from 3:00 until 6:00 p.m. Sunday, October 5, 2014, with a vigil service at 5:45 p.m. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, October 6, 2014 at Saints Philip and James Catholic Church, Grand Mound. The Rev. Fr. William Kneemiller will officiate and burial will be in the church cemetery.
