Melvin G. Ilg, 89, of DeWitt, Iowa, died early Monday morning, April 28, 2014 in his home.

Melvin George Ilg was born March 25, 1925, in Otter Creek, Iowa, to Edward and Margaret (Ludwig) Ilg. He attended rural schools, and began farming at an early age. Melvin served his country in the United States Navy from 1948 until 1952. On April 18, 1953, he was united in marriage to Beverly Mueller at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Grand Mound. The couple resided in DeWitt most of their married life where they raised their family. He worked at the former Ceamer's Garage in Bettendorf, Iowa, as a mechanic. Melvin was employed by Alcoa of Riverdale, Iowa, for 34 years until retirement in 1987.

He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, DeWitt, and the Eugene McManus American Legion Post of #238 of DeWitt. A large part of Melvin's retirement was fishing and traveling to Wisconsin with his wife as well as grandchildren, family and friends. He loved fishing and maintaining his cars to perfection.

Surviving are his loving wife of 61 years, Bev; sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Sherrie Ilg of Swisher, Iowa, and Lindy and Anita Ilg of DeWitt; grandchildren, Melissa (Oliver) East, Bryan (Stephanie) Ilg and Justin Ilg and Candace (Kendall) Claeys, Allyson Ilg and Hunter Ilg; great-grandchildren, Colton, Asher and Benjamin Claeys; a sister, Darlene Ilg of DeWitt.

Preceding Melvin in death were his parents; a grandson, Reece Ilg and brothers, Gerald and Wayne Ilg.

The family will receive relatives and friends at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt, from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. Thursday, May 1, 2014. A time of sharing and remembrance of Melvin's life will be held at 7:00 p.m. led by Melvin's daughter-in-law, the Rev. Sherrie Ilg. A Service of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 2, 2014, at Grace Lutheran Church, DeWitt, with the Rev. Ron Rafferty officiating. Burial and military rites will follow at Elmwood Cemetery, DeWitt. The family suggests memorials to the DeWitt Area Veterans Memorial or Grace Lutheran Church.

Pallbearers will be Bryan Ilg, Hunter Ilg, Justin Ilg, Kendall Claeys, Oliver East and John Ilg.
