The Clinton Herald Friday April 21, 1911 No. 95 p. 8 Old Resident Passes Away Mrs. Mary D. Sylvanus Dies Friday Morning, Following a Short Illness Here Since 1867 Mrs. Mary D. Sylvanus, aged 79 years, widow of Mortimer Sylvanus and a resident of Clinton since 1867, died about 9:30 o'clock Friday morning at her home 635 Ninth avenue. He death was the indirect result of a fall about a year ago, when she broke an arm, although her serious illness dated only from last Sunday. The funeral arrangements have not been completed, depending on word to be recieved from relatives at South Bend, Ind. Born in England on March 21, 1832, Mrs. Sylvanus spent the major portion of her life until she was 18 years of age at Liverpool, England. She then came to America with her parents, who settled at Lowell, Mass. In 1857, she was wedded at Lowell to Mortimer Sylvanus. For a time they resided at Milwaukee,Wis., and in 1867 came to Clinton, where Mr. Sylvanus died in 1883. About a year ago, Mrs. Sylvanus suffered a fall in which an arm was broken. She never completely recovered from the nervous shock caused by the accident. He daughter, Mrs. Cassius M. Burlingame, cmae from the home in Chicago this week together with her daughter, Miss Mary Adelaide Burlingame. Mr. Burlingame will arrive here Saturday morning. Mrs. Sylvanus leaves to mourn her death one daughter, Mrs. Burlingame, and the following grand-children; Miss Theodore Sylvanus, a teacher in the schools at South Bend, Ind., Charles Mortimer Sylvanus and Miss Marguertie Sylvanus, children of Theodore Sylvanus, deceased; and Miss Mary Adelaide Burlingame and Cyril Mortimer Burlingame, children of Mrs. Burlingame.
