The Clinton Daily Herald Thursday January 11, 1883 Vol. XV No. 110 p. 3 Death of M.J. Silvanus The sudden and wholly unexpected announcement of the death in Burlington of Mr. M.J. Silvanus, briefly conveyed by telegram yesterday morning to his wife in this city, following a dispatch from her son in Freeport stating that his father was ill, proved a severe shock to the family, to whom the dispatches gave the first intimation that the beloved husband and father was in other than his usual health. Mr. Silvanus, who is a painter by trade, had been of late years manufacturing and introducing some patent medicines of which he was the inventor, and left Clinton last September on a tour of the State in that interest. He repeatedly wrote to his family, who received their last letter from him just before Christmas, with money enclosed for the purchase of holiday gifts and many loving wishes that their Christmas might be happily spent. Since then Mrs. Silvanus has written once or twice to her husband at his Burlington address, without receiving any reply, and was beginning to feel considerable anxiety in consequence. Her husband had spoken of receiving a severe fall, which may or may not have led to his demise, as the cause of his death is not yet known. The telegram from Theodore, who resides at Freeport and is Secretary of the water company there, requested Mrs. Silvanus to meet him at Fulton Junction in the afternoon, and the mother and son had a brief conference at the depot there in the afternoon while the train halted. Theodore being then enroute to Burlington to bring home his father's remains. He had endeavored to breat the news as gently as possible to his mother, although knowing when he sent the telegram that his father was no more. A telegram from Mr. T.R. Silvanus dated at Burlington this morning, states that his father died at nine o'clock Wednesday morning and the he will arrive here with the remains by the nine o'clock train to-morrow morning. The funeral will occur on Saturday afternoon at two o'clock, with services at the family residence, No. 635 Ninth avenue. Deceased was 51 years of age, and had resided in this vicinity for sixteen years. He leaves besides his wife three children, Theodore, the daughter Jessie, aged fifteen, and Herbert, eight years old. Mrs. Silvanus has been engaged in the millinery business here for ten years or more, and the fmaily have a wide circle of friends and acquaintances.
