The Clinton Herald Wednesday August 5, 1908 John J. Jefferies died at 12:40 o'clock this afternoon at the home of his son, J.Q. Jefferies, 704 Bluff road, as the result of heart trouble which had confined him to his bed since the first of last June. The deceased man was aged 84 years and had been a resident of Lyons and Clinton since 1857. No funeral arrangements have been made, but interment will be at Springdale cemetery, where Mrs. Jefferies and other deceased members of the family are buried. Mr. Jefferies, was born in Somersetshire, England on December 8, 1824. He came to America in 1847, locating at Cicero, N.Y., and in the spring of 1857 he removed to Clinton, residing in Clinton county continuously since 1857. Mr. Jefferies was a member of Lyons lodge, No. 61, I.O.O.F. since 1863. In 1847 he was married to Miss Diana Brunt, who died on October 16, 1892. Since the death of his wife, Mr. Jefferies had made his home, nearly all of the time with his son, J.Q. Jefferies. Seven children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Jefferies, as follows: James, who died in infancy while crossing the ocean; Jimmy, who was drowned in the river, at Lyons, in 1859; Elizabeth, who is now Mrs. C.M. Seeber, of Preston; Belle E., who became Mrs. J.F. Grote, but died in February, 1902; Quincy, who died in 1860; Francis, who died in 1861; and John Q. Jefferies, the only children surviving being Mrs. C.M. Seeber of Preston and J.Q. Jefferies of this city. Seven grandchildren also survive, as follows: Lyle, Carl and Francis Jefferies of this city: Harry and Belle Seeber of Preston; Mrs. William Lynn, of Preston, and Edith Grote of this city. Until a few years ago Mr. Jefferies, worked at his trade as a mason. Until about June 1st, when he was taken to his bed with his last illness, he rode his bicycle about the city and was apparently in very fair health. For the past fifty years he kept a dairy of his life, entering the items daily. In the last few weeks, however, the entries were made by the deceased man's son.
