Roy S. Hume, 90, of Clinton, passed away, Monday, January 20, 2014 at Mercy Living Center – South.

Roy was born on June 27, 1923, in Jamaica, Iowa, the son of the late Sanford and Flora (Flackler) Hume. He graduated eighth grade in Belpassi, California. He worked on the family farm, the Milwaukee Railroad, enlisted into the United States Navy, and eventually retired from Allied Structural Steel in Clinton after 35 years.

On November 22, 1953 he married Joan C. (Reynolds) Motroni in Clinton, Iowa. After 50 years of marriage Joan preceded him in death on July 28, 2003. Roy is survived by his sisters Doris Rainer, Betty Henry and Carol Mowrer.

Roy proudly served in the United States Navy during World War II as a plane captain on the USS San Jacinto from 1943-1946. He loved going to his annual ship reunion to see his old friends and shipmates. He was also proud of the fact that President George HW Bush and pro football Hall of Famer Art Donovan were shipmates of his. He received and attended invitations from President Bush to attend the opening of his Presidential Library at Texas A&M in College Station, Texas and the commissioning of the aircraft carrier USS George HW Bush in Norfolk, Virginia.

Roy was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He was a member of the Clinton Church of Christ, where he served as an Elder and taught Sunday school to 5th and 6th graders for over 20 years. He was also one of the founding members of the Lighthouse Church of Christ. He always smiled and when anyone would ask him how he was doing he would answer “if I was any better, I wouldn’t know what to do.”

Hume of Johnsburg, Illinois, Peter (Sue) Motroni of Clinton, Tim (Vicki) Motroni of Delmar, Iowa, John (Ann) Motroni of Green Back, Tennessee, Kathy (Mark) Mallicoat of Clinton, 10 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews, and a very special niece Mary Beth Johnson.
