Rieneilda E. Determan, 96, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 12, 2014 at Mercy Living Center North. A Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, January 16th at 10:30 AM at Jesus Christ Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Clinton, Iowa. Visitation will be at Pape Funeral Home from
3:00 – 6:00 PM on Wednesday, January 15. Burial will be at St. Irenaeus Cemetery in Clinton, Iowa. Memorials may be made to Mercy Auxiliary. Family and friends are invited to share condolences online at www.papefh.com

Rieneilda was born on February 26, 1917 in Preston, Iowa to George and Theresa (Etringer) Schaefer. She attended Preston schools and graduated in 1935. She attended nurse’s training at St. Joseph’s Mercy Hospital in Clinton, becoming a registered nurse in 1938. She worked as a private duty nurse and at Mercy Hospital for 2 years. She married Gregory M. Determan on November 28, 1940 in Preston. Gregory died on July 30, 1990.

After marriage she lived in Baltimore, MD & Omaha, NE. Upon returning to Clinton, she re-entered the nursing profession performing private & general duty at Mercy Hospital from 1957 to 1969. She eventually became head nurse of the obstetrics department, retiring in 1979. She was a member of Prince of Peace Parish (St. Patrick’s Catholic Church) where she was an active participant of the Ave Maria Card Circle for well over 50 years and joined another card circle in her later years. She was one of the first Eucharist Ministers and worked at church funeral lunches. She volunteered at Mercy Hospital taking blood pressures for senior citizens. She was a member of 55 Alive Club where she enjoyed bowling & visiting with friends each Friday. She loved traveling, gardening, sewing, & cooking. She looked forward to playing cards and gambling. She was an avid Chicago Cubs fan.

She will be greatly missed by her three children, Karen (Gerald) Dix of Bellevue, NE, Kathleen Peters of Clinton, and David (Freda) Determan of Minneapolis, KS; one greatly loved grandson, Matthew Determan; three sisters, Marielda Klemme, Marcella Butschi, and Leanna Deppe all of Preston and a brother, Joseph Schaefer of Preston. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband,four brothers, and one sister.
