Death of John M. Costello

At his home one mile north of Petersville, at 10 o’clock Saturday night, November 30, occurred the death of John M. Costello at the age of 59 years. His death was very sudden and was caused by angina pectoris, Mr. Costello passing away before medical assistance could be secured.

Mr. Costello was born in Canada in 1853 and came to this locality when a child with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Matthew Costello. In 1876 he was married to Miss Katie Flynn, who with nine children survives him, as does his aged father.

Mr. Costello was one of the most influential and highly respected farmers of the Petersville neighborhood. He was a man whose word was as good as his bond; a man who in his business dealings with his fellow men, never took advantage of any one and who leaves an untarnished name, a credit to his children and the community in which he lived. Those who knew him mourn the loss of a tried and true friend.

The funeral took place Tuesday morning and was one of the largest ever held at the Petersville church, the members of the Total Abstinence Society attending in a body. Solemn requiem high mass was celebrated by Rev. James Comerland of Lyons, with Rev. B. F. Luedtke of Sugar Creek as deacon and Rev. Thomas O’Dowd as subdeacon, the latter preaching the sermon, after which the remains were interred in the Petersville Cemetery. The pall bearers were John and Matt Heenan, Leonard Reynolds, James Goodall, A. J. Mallon and William Quinlan.
