Obituary
Joseph A Jost, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Jost, was born Jan 24, 1867 on a farm two miles south of Andover. At an early age he became employed at a blacksmith shop and learned that trade in the old stone building known as the six mile house on the Clinton road. On November 6th, 1889 he was united in marriage to Barbara Detterman at Sugar Creek, and they made their home at Remsen, Iowa, where he had a shop. In the year 1895 they removed to Preston and Mr. Jost was employed since that time until about two months before his death as blacksmith and wheel wright. He was a master mechanic and wood worked and his shop was always filled with work. Mr. Jost was not [only] a workman of the first water, but he was also a good citizen and neighbor. He served Preston as mayor and also as member of the city council and was one of the Preston fire company. He was interested in the community and was always willing to help in any public enterprise. Nine children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Jost, three of whom preceded their father in death, Benjamin at the age of seven, Mary at the age of three and Lillian at the age of fourteen; three sons and three daughters survive, with their mother to mourn the death of their father and husband. Clara, Mrs. Glenn O. White of Long Grove, Miss Theresa at home, John of Davenport, Joe of Michigan City, Ind., Miss Helen, of Davenport and Vernard of Des Moines. The deceased is also survived by one grandchild, Norma[n] White and by three sisters, Mrs. Leo Detterman and Mrs. A. J. Detterman of Beresford, S. Dak., Mrs. Geo. Detterman, of Sioux Falls, S. Dak., Ferdinand of Morris, Minn., Herman of Presho, S. Dak., Henry of Rapid City, S. Dak., John of Beresford, S. Dak., and Ben of Scenic, S. Dak.

Mr. Jost took care of his business until about the first of August when he was compelled to close his shop. He then submitted to medical care but the [disease] had gained great head way and at twelve forty-five p.m. Wednesday, October 31st he departed this life at the age of 61 years, 9 months and 7 days. Death was due to cancer.

Funeral services were held Saturday morning at nine o'clock from St. Joseph's Catholic church of which the deceased was a memeber. Requiem high mass was sung by the Rev. Father McDomaugh. Interment was made in Sugar Creek cemetery. The Preston Volunteer Fire Department attended the funeral in a body.

Pall bearers were Ed. Dolan, Henry Wellendorf, John Rehr, Robt. Powers, Henry Tollenaar, and Wm. Schwartz.

The following relatives and friends from out of town were in attendance at the funeral: Mr. and Mrs. G. O. White and son Norman, of Long Grove; Mr. and Mrs. John Jost of Davenport; Mr. Joe Jost, of Michigan City, Ind.; Mis Helen Jost, of Davenport; Mr. Vernard Jost, of Des Moines; Henry Jost of Rapid City, S. Dak., Mr. J. G. Walters of Davenport; Mr. Gerald Reser of Moline, Ill.; Mr. and Mrs. M. F. Spain of Petersville; Frank and Leo Jost of Lyons; Mr. and Mrs. Matt Detterman and Mr. and Mrs. John Detterman of Sugar Creek.

Eight officials of the Standard Oil company, with which company Mr. John Jost is employed, were in attendance at the funeral.
