Edward C. Youngers, 92, of Calamus, Iowa, died early Friday morning, January 18, 2013 at Veterans Hospital, Iowa City, Iowa.
The family will receive visitors from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. Sunday, January 20, 2013, at Faith Lutheran Church, Calamus, Iowa. A Service of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, January 21, 2013, at Faith Lutheran Church, Calamus, with the Reverend Sarah Kretzmann officiating. Burial and military rites will follow at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, rural Calamus.

Pallbearers will be Allen Smith, Jeff Jacobi, Daryl Henning, Albert Green, Doug Goettsch, Brad Johnson and Matt Johnson.

Memorials may be made to Faith Lutheran Church, Calamus, and the LeClaire American Legion Post #347.

Edward C. Youngers was born June 11, 1920, in LeClaire, Iowa, to Benjamin and Marie (Limbrecht) Youngers. He served his country during World War II in the US Army Air CORPS. He was awarded the Purple Heart and Air Medal with 2 clusters. Ed was a Tail Gunner on a B-17 and was shot down on his 10th mission, they ditched in the North Sea spending three and a half days in a life-raft, rescued by the Germans and spent 22 months as a Prisoner of War at Stalag XVIII B. Ed was united in marriage to Uvonne “Sis” Goettsch, July 24, 1948, at Saint Mark Church in Davenport, Iowa.

Ed was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, Calamus. He was a charter member of Wapsi Oaks Country Club, LeClaire American Legion Post #347, V.F.W. DeWitt, Disabled American Veterans, Davenport, and the Military Order of Purple Heart. Ed organized and was a member of the Eastern Iowa Chapter of the American Ex-Prisoners of War, and was the first commander of that chapter for 2 years.

Those left to honor his memory include his loving wife of 64 years, Uvonne “Sis”; a daughter, Julie (Steve) Hutchings and their children Chad and Danelle of Omaha, Nebraska; a son, Mark (Betty) Youngers and their children Kendall and Aaron of Kenosha, Wisconsin; sister-in-law, Laurel Goettsch of Bluegrass, Iowa, brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Dwain and Dorothy Goettsch of Calamus; nieces Denise Goettsch, Diane (Allen) Smith, Dodie (Jeff) Jacobi, Doreen (Daryl) Henning, Dawn (Albert) Green, and nephew, Douglas Goettsch.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, Donald Goettsch.
