Virgil Henry Cleveland, 85, of DeWitt, Iowa, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, Monday evening January 21, 2013, at Select Specialty Hospital, Davenport, Iowa.
Visitation will be 9:00 until 11:45 a.m. Friday, January 25, 2013, at Grace Lutheran Church, DeWitt, Iowa. A Service of Christian Burial will follow at 12:00 noon in the church. Burial will take place in Elmwood Cemetery, DeWitt, where Virgil will be laid to rest beside his beloved wife of 45 years, Joan, with full military honors. A funeral luncheon will follow back in the Church Hall. Pallbearers will be grandsons, Josh Cleveland, Jamie Cleveland, Mitchell Cleveland, David Cleveland, Jason Moore and Matt Lindaman. Honorary pallbearers will be granddaughters, Angi Ralston, Keli Runge, Randi Runge, Stevi King and Tracy Lindaman.

Virgil was born May 6, 1927, in Clinton, Iowa, to Homer and Malinda (Schrum) Cleveland. He was a WWII veteran, having served in the US Marine Corp. He married Joan Jane Petersen on November 16, 1957. For nearly 30 years of his life, Virgil was a truck driver. In later years he worked for Iowa Mutual Insurance Company, from which he retired in 1988.

Virgil was a life-long member of Grace Lutheran Church in DeWitt. He was a long time member of the Eugene McManus American Legion Post #238, DeWitt. He loved to camp and fish, where he spent time with his family and friends. His grandchildren were always excited to go camping with Grandpa Virg and Grandma Joan.

Survivors include sons, Mark (Chris) Cleveland and Al (Jeri) Moore, all of DeWitt; daughters, Dee (Dave) Runge of DeWitt, Deb (Gary) Carson of Dubuque, Iowa, Roxanne Wallace of Rock Island, Illinois and Jerry Gay Cleveland of DeWitt; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and a great-great-granddaughter; a sister, Shirley Claeys of DeWitt.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Joan on January 3, 2003; his parents; a son, Larry; and a great-grandson, Jack Thomas Lindaman.
