Mrs. Joan Reed, 88, of DeWitt, Iowa, died Tuesday evening, January 22, 2013, at Genesis Medical Center-DeWitt.

Mrs. Reed, the former Mary Joan McDermott was born January 4, 1925, in Charlotte, Iowa, the daughter of John and Mae (Troy) McDermott. Joan graduated from Saint Joseph Catholic High School in 1942. On November 21, 1942, Joan was united in marriage to William L. Reed in Saint Joseph Catholic Church, DeWitt. The couple farmed and raised their family of 15 children at rural DeWitt. Bill preceded Joan in death on July 21, 1989.

She was a longtime and faithful member of Saint Joseph Catholic Church, DeWitt, and Saint Anne Catholic Church, Welton, and their Altar and Rosary Society. Joan enjoyed reading and playing cards.

Surviving are children, Patrick (Linda) of Moline, Illinois, Kathleen (Pete) Picchi of Indianapolis, Indiana, Dotty Fischer of Atlanta, Georgia, Joe of Charlotte, Leo of Clinton, Iowa, Joan (Ron) Wheeler of Aurora, Illinois, Julie Reed of Elmhurst, Illinois, John (Carol) of DeWitt, Helen Robinson of Richland, Washington, Greg of DeWitt, Barbara (David) Bowstead of Bettendorf, Iowa, Jim (Gala) of DeWitt, and Lisa Reed of Green Bay, Wisconsin; 27 grandchildren and 41 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Margaret Kedley of DeWitt and Mary Schmidt of Dubuque, Iowa.

In addition to her husband, Bill, Joan was preceded in death by sons, Mark and Tom; a grandson, Jeff Picchi; a sister, Miriam Scibetta and a son-in-law, Rex Robinson.

The family will receive relatives and friends at Saint Joseph Catholic Church, DeWitt, from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. Sunday, January 27, 2013 with a Vigil Service at 7:30 p.m. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, January 28, 2013, in the Church. The Reverend Father Paul Connolly will officiate and burial will follow in the Church Cemetery. Memorials may be designated to Saint Joseph School.
