Earl D. “Pete” Cottral, 96, and Sylvia M. Cottral, 95, of Clinton, died Wednesday, May 9, 2012 at the Alverno. Memorial Services for Pete and Sylvia will be 10:30am, Wednesday, May 16, 2012 at the Community Congregational Church. Burial will follow in the Oakland Cemetery. A luncheon and fellowship will follow the interment services at the church. The Clinton Chapel Snell-Zornig Funeral Homes and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.

Earl David Cottral was born on July 13, 1915 in Clinton, Iowa the son of J.F. and Mary (Gray) Cottral. Sylvia Mary Lindmeier was born on January 18, 1917 in Clinton, Iowa, the daughter of Henry and Anna (Carstensen) Lindmeier. Pete and Sylvia were united in marriage on July 9, 1941 at the Community Congregational Church. They lived in Clinton their entire lives and lived at Cherry Bank on Main Avenue from 1963-2011. Their residence was added to the National Historical Registry.

Pete was a 1932 graduate of Lyons High School and attended and graduated from Wartburg College. He later enlisted in the United States Army during World War II from 1942-1945. Pete was the sales manager with Clinton Corn retiring in 1980.

Pete was a member of Community Congregational Church, Lyons Masonic #93 AF AM, KAABA Shrine, and Clinton Hi-12 Club, and the American Legion. He was a member of the Clinton Horsemen’s Association and the 29 Club. He enjoyed playing golf at the Clinton Country Club and cards with his regular gin group.

Sylvia was a 1935 graduate of Lyons High School and attended the Scovill Business School. She worked at Schick General Hospital during World War II. As a homemaker, she enjoyed gardening, baking, and being with her family.

Sylvia was a member of the Community Congregational Church, PEO Chapter HV, and the Clinton Horseman’s Association. She also enjoyed playing golf and bridge at the Clinton Country Club.

Pete and Sylvia are survived by two daughters: Barbara (John) Bean of Greencastle, Indiana, and Lindsy (Jim) Meyer of Estero, Florida; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Pete was preceded in death by his parents, five sisters, and one brother. Sylvia was preceded in death by her parents.

The family requests that memorials be made to the Community Congregational Church.
