The Reverend Lowell D. Hohensee, 77, of DeWitt, Iowa, died Saturday morning, May 12, 2012, in his home.

Lowell Dwaine Hohensee was born on New Year's Day, January 1, 1935, in Western, Nebraska, to Milton and Marie (Collmann) Hohensee. He was educated in rural Nebraska schools until 5th grade, when his family moved to Pocahontas, Iowa. Lowell attended Pocahontas schools and graduated in 1952. He was confirmed at St. Peter Lutheran Church where he participated in youth and church activities. Lowell went on to study at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa, graduating in 1956. He put himself through college working on a carpenter crew, where he had the privilege of helping to build two churches, one being the new church for his home parish of St. Peter Lutheran. On June 16, 1957, he was united in marriage to Norma Jean Peters in Pocahontas. Reverend Hohensee graduated with a Master's in Divinity degree from Wartburg Seminary in Dubuque, Iowa, in 1960.

Reverend Hohensee began his ministry in the American Lutheran Church, serving as an intern at St. Paul, at Yorktown, Texas. Following his ordination in 1960, he went on to serve as a Pastor in the Iowa Congregations of Salem in Spragueville, and Ascension in Goose Lake until 1964 when the family moved to Primghar, where he served at Grace for four years. In the fall of 1967 he was called to serve at St. John’s (Vilmar) in Greene until 1976. He served the next 12 years at Our Savior’s and Faith in Calamus. In 1990 he was called to serve the Wisconsin parish of New Hope Lutheran (Northfield) of Hixton until 1996. At the time of his death he had been serving as Interim Pastor of St. Paul Lutheran of Tripoli, Iowa, for the better part of 13 years.

Reverend Hohensee, known to all as Bud, was a member of Parkview Lutheran Church. Bud served on the Muscatine Lutheran Homes Board for nine years. He enjoyed family time, traveling, gardening, carpentry work, boating and water skiing. Bud especially enjoyed sharing boating fun with the church youth groups, confirmation classes, and friends; tubing and teaching them to water ski was a special joy for him even through the summer of 2011.

Surviving are his beloved wife of nearly 55 years, Norma; children and their spouses, Leann and John Skeens of Glendale Heights, Illinois, Jay and Kim Hohensee of Broomfield, Colorado, and Loraine and Mark Mataya of Urbandale, Iowa; grandchildren, Carl, Sarah and Lisa Skeens, Mallory and Alex Hohensee and Zachary Mataya; a sister, Lenora DeWall of Pocahontas; numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents, a brother Roland, an infant brother, Lawrence, and an infant sister, Jean.

The family will receive friends at Parkview Lutheran Church from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. Thursday, May 24, 2012, and from 12:30 until 1:45 p.m. Friday, May 25, 2012. A Service of Christian Burial will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday in The Church, with The Reverend Robert Bartel and The Reverend Peter Hoft officiating. A graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 26, 2012, at Summitt Hill Cemetery in Pocahontas, Iowa. A memorial service will follow at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, in St. Paul Lutheran Church at Tripoli, Iowa.
