The Clinton Herald Tuesday December 28, 1875 p 4 Calamus Items -- A Mysterious Death Calamus, Iowa, Dec. 27, 1875 - Our usually quiet town was thrown into quite an excitement this morning at the news of the death of Chas. Hill, Sr., on his farm at Buena Vista, six miles south of Calamus. Some suspected foul play, and E.T. Owens, as ex officio Coroner, summoned a jury of Messrs. Kenyon, Scott and Hand, and also Chas. E. Lee, and repaired to the scene to hold an inquest. At dark tonight the jury had not yet concluded, but will hand in their verdict tomorrow forenoon. It seems that he had been out of health for some time. He had sold his farm and was living with a German family who had bought it out, and he intended soon to sell his grain and go west, where he has two sons and a daughter. He retired about seven p.m., and the family about ten. Just about daybreak the German got up to build a fire, and while moving around the stove in the dull light stumbled over something. He then lit a light and discovered the old man lying dead on the floor with his head on his arm, as though he had fallen out of a chair. The parties say that they heard no noise during the night. As soon as the jury return their verdict, will give you full particulars.
