Mr. Everett H. Schroeder, 89, of DeWitt, Iowa, died Thursday morning, March 8, 2012 at Genesis Medical Center-East Campus in Davenport, Iowa.

The family will receive friends at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt, from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. Friday, March 9, 2012 and from 9:30 until 10:45 a.m. Saturday, March 10, 2012 at Grace Lutheran Church, DeWitt. A Service of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday in the Church. The Rev. Ron Rafferty and the Rev. Brad Brown will officiate. Interment will be in the Lost Nation Cemetery. Memorials may be designated to Grace Camp.

Pallbearers will be Steven Witthoft, Darin Ladlie, Ryan Basye, Mark Saunders, Richard Peasley and Jim Kueter. Honorary pallbearers will be Sara Ladlie, Susan Basye, Tina Witthoft, Heather, Jacob and Adam Ladlie, Geneva Basye and Tori Witthoft.

Everett Henry Schroeder was born March 7, 1923 in Toronto, Iowa, to August H. and Freida (Bentrott) Schroeder. He was a 1940 graduate of Wheatland High School. He married Anna Mae Grundmeier in November of 1943 and she died just three years later on November 16, 1946. On November 27, 1947, Everett was united in marriage to Esther Latare at Zion Lutheran Church in Wyoming, Iowa. The couple resided in Lost Nation where Everett was employed as the Lost Nation Street Commissioner. He also drove school bus and was a volunteer fireman while in Lost Nation. In 1966, Everett became the Director of Public Works for the City of DeWitt. He retired on December 31, 1985 following 19 1/2 years of service.

He was a longtime member of Grace Lutheran Church of DeWitt where he served as an usher. Everett was a member of the DeWitt Noon Lions Club for over 35 years and was a member of the Plus 60 Club of Davenport. He loved to golf and was a member of Wapsi Oaks Country Club at rural Calamus for many years. Everett enjoyed spending the winters in Texas and South Carolina.

Surviving are his dear wife of 64 years, Esther; a daughter, Janice Stockstell of Greenfield, Wisconsin; a son-in-law, Eldon (Sharon) Witthoft of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa; grandchildren, Sara (Darin) Ladlie, Susan (Ryan) Basye and Steven (Tina) Witthoft; great-grandchildren, Heather, Jacob, Adam, Geneva and Tori.

In addition to his first wife, Anna Mae, Everett was also preceded in death by a daughter, Sandra Jean Witthoft, a son-in-law, Ron Stockstell, step-brothers, Henry and Kenneth Griebel and a step-sister, LaVone Mostaert.
