James R. Bethel, 86, of Clinton, died Monday at Mercy North Hospital, Clinton.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Clinton Chapel Snell-Zornig Dennis A. Lemke Funeral Homes and Crematory with the Rev. Matthew Martens officiating. Burial will be in the Clinton Lawn Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Preston American Legion Post 602. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Tyler Bethel, Nathan Bethel, Gary Edlen, Jerry Moehr, Richard Moehr, Jack Leibert, Lloyd Prussia, Harold Mootz, Herbert Engleking, Jim McDonald, Wilfred Wilkens and Jerry Ritenour.
He was born Aug. 12, 1916 in Preston to Willis and Jennifer Pearl Boothby Bethel. He married Lucille J. Moehr on March 3, 1945. He graduated from Goose Lake High School in 1934. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from May 1939 to September 1945.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Terry (Connie) Bethel of Woodhull, Ill., and Perry (Barb) of Bondurant; two daughters, Pearl (Glen) Svenson of Clinton and Twila Bethel of Clinton; and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his stepmother, two sisters and one brother.
