Hubert D.2 Norman (Jacob1), born 8 Feb 1923 in Clinton, Clinton, Iowa; died 28 Oct 2000 in Polk, Iowa. He married in 1944 Evelyn T. (---), born 20 Jan 1922; died 19 Jul 1994 in Adel, Dallas, Iowa.

The Day October 31, 2000 Norwich - Hubert D. "Hugh", 72, of Des Moines, Iowa, father of Richard Norman of Norwich, a copy editor at The Day, died Saturday of complications of heart disease. He was born in Clinton, Iowa, the son of Jacob and Bertha Norman. He was the widower of Evelyn Norman, who died in 1994, after 50 years of marriage. Mr. Norman attended the University of Iowa, where he was captain of the swim team in 1944. He was a retired officer and director of Preferred Risk (now Guide One Life Insurance Company and lived in Adel, Iowa, for 38 years until moving to Des Moines two years ago. Known as "that one legged swimmer from Clinton", Mr. Norman lost his left leg in a train accident at age four. What at Clinton High School, he won several state swwimming championships, set six state records, three national records and was named to the All-American swim team in 1941. He was in the first group to be inducted into the Iowa High School Swimming Hall of Fame. During the next several years Mr. Norman was a starter and referee at high school swimming meets, including the state championships. In 1963, he became a starter and referee for high school boys and girls track and field and was a Drake Relays official beginning in 1966. The highlight of his career was his selection as the referee of combined events (men's decathlon and women's heptathloon) at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. He was selected the United States Track and Field Federation's outstanding track and field official in 1986. and was elected chairman of officials for 1986-87. In addition to his son, he is survived by two other sons, James Norman of Des Moines and Lee Norman of Seattle, Wash.; one daughter, Gretchen Norman of Chicago; a brother, Delmer Norman of San Antonio, Texas; and five grandchildren. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Jacob Norman Jr., and Edwin and Kenneth Norman. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Adel United Methodist Church. Memorial contributions may be made to the ADM Scholarship Foundation at the ADM High School in Adel, or mailed to Darrell Bauman, treasurer, 4 Sunset Circle, Adel, IA 50003.
