Hobart "Hoby" Carstensen, 81, DeWitt, Iowa, died early Saturday morning, July 16, 2011 at Westwing Place, DeWitt.

He was born April 17, 1930 in Clinton, Iowa, to Thomas and Catherina (Schmidt) Carstensen. He attended school in Elvira and graduated from Welton High School in 1948. Hoby served in the Army during the Korean Era and was honorably discharged as a Corporal. He farmed at rural Calamus for many years and also sold seed corn. On December 19, 1970, Hoby was united in marriage to Evelyn (Sass) Klug at Zion Lutheran Church, Oelwein.

Hoby was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Calamus, Grand Mound American Legion and Farm Bureau. He loved the land he farmed.

Surviving are his wife, Evelyn; son and daughter-in-law, Lans and Karla Carstensen of Santa Clarita, California and their children, Andrea and Benjamin; step-daughter and her husband, Linda and David Whitman and their children, Peter (Lydia) Whitman, Bryan Whitman and Karen Whitman; grandson, Chance Klug and great-granddaughter, Ruth Whitman.

Preceding Hoby in death were a step-son, Lowell Klug, his parents and a brother, Raymond.

The family will receive friends at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt, from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. Thursday, July 21, 2011. A Service of Christian Burial will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, July 22, 2011 in Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Calamus. The Rev. Sarah Kretzmann will officiate with burial and military rites at the Church Cemetery.
