Donald Ray Shepard, 78, of Clinton, died Wednesday, April 6, 2011 at his home in Clinton.
Memorial Services will be 11:00 am, Saturday, April 9, 2011 at the Clinton Chapel, Snell-Zornig Funeral Homes and Crematory, with the Reverend Doctor Wilfred L. Karsten, Pastor, Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Moline, IL, conducting the service. Inurnment will be at the Rock Island National Cemetery at a later date.
Donald Ray Shepard was born November 6, 1932 in Clinton, Iowa, the son of Howard L. and Margaret (Wriedt) Shepard. He was married to Elizabeth C. McKensie in July 1958 in Banning, California; she died February 2007. He recently married Mary Ann Gronwaldt, Clinton.
Don was a Clinton High School graduate and served in the United States Air Force from 1952 â?? 1956. He worked for AT&T as a transmission engineer for over 30 years, retiring in 1990. Besides a resident of Clinton he also lived Banning, California; Escondido, California; and Basking Ridge, New Jersey.
He was a member of the Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Moline, Illinois, and the Disabled American Veterans. His passions in life were his faith, breeding dogs, woodcarving, and helping children.
Don is survived by his wife Mary Ann of Clinton; 2 children: David (Connie) Shepard of Williamsburg, Virginia and Laurie (Fred) Friberg Modaff of Foster, Oregon; 2 grandsons: Scott Shepard of Richmond, Virginia and Dave Weil of Las Vegas, Nevada; 3 step children: Jeffrey (Brenda) Gronwaldt of Clinton, Kenneth Gronwaldt of Clinton, and Diane (Lee) Corey of Clinton; 5 step grandsons; 7 step great-grandchildren; 2 sisters: Joan (Ron) Baird of Cotter, Iowa, and Janet (Ken) Phillips of Moline, Illinos; 2 brothers: Robert (Jokie) Bretl of Moline, Illinois and William Huntley of St. Louis, Missouri; brother-in-law: Marvin (Muffy) Zastrow of Clinton; and many nieces and nephews.
His was preceded in death by his first wife, parents, and 3 sisters.
In lieu of flowers memorial may be made to the Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Moline, Illinois; the Paralyzed Veterans of America; or Genesis Hospice of Davenport.
