Clinton - Sister Catherine Lodder, OSF, age 99 of Clinton died Friday, March 25, 2011 at The Alverno Health Care Facility. A Mass of the Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:00 A.M. on Tuesday, March 29th at The Canticle, 841 13th Ave. No. with the Rev. Joseph Nguyen officiating. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:30 P.M. Monday at the Canticle where a rosary will be recited at 4:00 P.M. and a Scripture Service will be at 6:30 P.M. Burial will be in St. Irenaeus Calvary Cemetery. Casket bearers will be relatives, friends, and members of the Sisters of St. Francis. The Pape Funeral Home is assisting.
Sister Catherine was born in Marceline, Missouri on May 18, 1911, the daughter of John Henry and Anna Margaret (Lauhoff) Lodder. She attended St. Bonaventure Elementary and High School in Marceline and graduated from Mount St. Clare Academy, Clinton. She received her AA Degree from Mount St. Clare College, Clinton and a B.A. degree in Education at St. Ambrose College, Davenport. She had additional study at De Paul University, Chicago; Loyola University of Los Angeles; the University of San Diego; the University of Iowa, Iowa City; and Marquette University, Milwaukee. Sister Catherine held an Iowa Permanent Professional Teaching Certificate and a California Teaching Certificate.
Sister Catherine joined the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Francis, Clinton on August 15, 1927 and made her final vows on April 17, 1933. Sister Catherine spent most of her 60 years of active ministry teaching junior high students, serving also as principal for 12 years. In Clinton, she taught at St. Patrick School. Other places where she taught were Denison, Hawarden, and Victor in Iowa; Easton, Missouri; Maysville, Kentucky; Toluca, Chicago and Rochelle in Illinois; and Chino, Highland, and Riverside, in California. For ten years she served in Burlington, Iowa, as administrator of the Ritter Home for retired women. Returning to Clinton, she continued her ministry to the elderly, serving as liaison between the The Alvervo Health Care Facility and Mount St. Clare Convent, and later The Canticle. She retired in 2004 and moved to The Alverno in November 2009.
Sister Catherine is survived by nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother John, and three sisters, Helen, Gertrude, and Mary (Sister Henrietta). Online condolences may be left at www.papefh.com
