“Smokey” Martin, 55, Barstow, California, formerly of DeWitt, died Dec. 14, 2010, at Kindred Healthcare Center in Ontario, California, after a brief illness.
Jim was born November 20, 1955, in DeWitt Community Hospital to Francis and Alice J. (Carber) Martin. He graduated from DeWitt Central High School in 1974. He was a member of the 1973 State Runner-up football team that was inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame. Following graduation he enlisted in the USMC, serving eight years. After an honorable discharge, he continued to reside in California. He was employed by Yellow Freight Trucking Company in Fontana, California.
Jim was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes, Chicago Bears, Cubs and Bulls fan. Jim will be missed by many but never forgotten. He will be in the hearts and memories of many people he met and became friends with over the years.
He is survived by three sons, Jason, of Portland, Oregon, Taylor, of San Bernardino, California, and Jared (Neko), of Barstow; his mother, Alice, DeWitt; sisters, Deb Martin, DeWitt, and Linda Martin, Oak Park, Illinois; a brother, Joseph (Sharon) Martin, DeWitt; nieces, Marissa and Rebecca Martin; a nephew, Patrick (Jeni) Martin, and their son, Jonathan; and a special friend, Faith Rich.
He was preceded in death by his father and his grandparents.
Family and friends may visit at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt, from 9:30 until 10:45 a.m. Saturday, April 16, 2011. A service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday in the Funeral Home. Interment and military rites will follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, DeWitt.
