Irene Genevieve Horras, 94, formerly of Long Grove and Walcott, passed peacefully from this earth Friday afternoon, April 1, 2011 at Westwing Place, DeWitt.
She was born August 22, 1916 at Wheatland, to Glen and Suzanne (Hirl) Organ. Irene married Carl H. Brus March 29, 1937 at Holy Name Cathedral, Chicago. They farmed near Long Grove until Mr. Brus' death January 16, 1963. She later married John Horras of Sigourney on June 28, 1980 and he passed away June 24, 1986. For several years, Irene kept house for the priest at St. Paul's Catholic Church, Davenport.
Irene was a wonderful mother who loved to bake, especially cookies. She was a Blue Ribbon winner at the Iowa State Fair. For many years, she was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church, Long Grove. Irene was a charter member of St. Ann's Guild and an officer of DCCW. For the past several years, Irene was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, Davenport.
Surviving are her children, Barbara Jean (Allen) Spickermann, New Liberty, Carl (Marti) Brus, LeClaire, Wayne Brus, Davenport, and Ronald (Sue) Brus, Iowa City; 10 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
Preceding Irene in death in addition to her husbands were her parents, sisters, Margaret Organ and Alice Quinn, brothers, Glen and Vernon Organ, a daughter-in-law, Rita Brus and a grandson, Carl Brus, IV.
The family will receive relatives and friends at St. Ann's Catholic Church, Long Grove, from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 5, 2011 with a vigil service at 6:45 p.m. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 6, 2011 in the Church with Msgr. Drake Shafer presiding. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Genesis Hospice.
Pallbearers will be Carlie, Andrew and Tim Brus and Earl, Kevin and David Spickermann. Honorary pallbearers will be Halley and Meagan Brus and Megan Goodwin.
