Arlene S. Burgess, 88, of Clinton died Sunday, January 9, 2011 at Mercy Living Center South in Clinton. Funeral services will be 10:30am Wednesday, January 12, 2011 at the Evangelical Free Church. Visitation will be from 3:00-7:00pm Tuesday, January 11, 2011 at the Evangelical Free Church. Burial will be in the Clinton Lawn Cemetery.
Arlene Shadle was born on September 26, 1922 in Clinton, the daughter of Archie and Helen (Blohm) Shadle. She was a 1941 Clinton High School graduate and a Scovil Business College graduate. She married Lester E. Burgess Jr. on June 12, 1948 at First Baptist Church in Clinton; he died on December 31, 2004.
She was a homemaker. She was previously employed with J.Q. Jefferies for 6 1/2 years.
Arlene was an active member of the Evangelical Free Church and their M&M senior group. She was a past member of the First Baptist Church in Clinton where she played the pipe organ for many years. Arlene was also very proud of the pin she earned during WWII for her 1,000 hours of service as a USO hostess.
She is survived by four sons: Roger (Maureen) Burgess of Clinton, Gary Burgess of Clinton, Bryon (Nancy) Burgess of Clinton and Lorne (Kathy) Burgess of Davenport; one daughter: Cindy (Dan) Nelson of Fulton; two grandchildren: Nate Burgess and Sherry Nelson; one sister: Mildred (Dex) Miller of New Boston, IL, and one brother: Raymond (Betty) Shadle of Clinton.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three brothers and one sister.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Evangelical Free Church or the family.
