Charles Jackson Shirley
(October 2, 1947 - October 2, 2010)

Charles J. Shirley, Charlotte, went to the arms of his Lord and Maker on his 63rd birthday, Saturday morning, October 2, 2010 following a long courageous battle with cancer.

Charles Jackson Shirley was born October 2, 1947 in Waterloo, Iowa, to Charles Oscar and Gene (Clark) Shirley. Following graduation from East High School in Waterloo, he entered the Army and served in Vietnam. Chuck was united in marriage to Tammy Sue Ketelsen, April 30, 1988. Together they raised five children. He had been employed by River Cities Industries, Eldridge. Tammy preceded Chuck in death, December 16, 2005.

He was a man that could fix anything, a jack of all trades. He was an outdoorsman, loved to garden and mow and enjoyed fishing.

Surviving are children, Alicia Ann (Jason) Held, Davenport, Robert David (Maria) Shirley, El Paso, Texas, Matthew Charles Shirley, Charlotte, Brittni Jo (Jessey) Smith, Charlotte and Lindsey Elizabeth Shirley, Charlotte, Terra Ann (David) Cleveland, Indianola, Iowa, and Mark Anthony Shirley, Cedar Rapids; grandchildren, Hannah Schreiber, Jasmine Held, Emily Shirley, Maxwell, Langley and Brinley Cleveland; sisters, Charlene (Jesse) Gilbreath, Foley, Alabama, Linda (Al) Niedert, Mary Morris and Janet (Craig) McAhren all of Waterloo; a brother, Tim (JoAnn) Shirley, Chanute, Kansas; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Ron and Betty Ketelsen, Clinton.

Preceding Chuck in death in addition to his wife were his parents, a son, Charles Ryan and two brothers, Eugene and David.

Family and friends may visit at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt, from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 5, 2010. A funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, October 6, 2010 in the Funeral Home Chapel. Military rites will follow.

Pallbearers will be Al Niedert, Adam Assenmacher, Travis Ketelsen, Tory Ketelsen, Allen Ketelsen, Dennis Gisel, Tom Torode and Seth Blanchard.
