James "Bob" Merritt

James R. “Bob” Merritt, 88, of Clinton, died Thursday, June 17, 2010 at the Crestridge Nursing Home, Maquoketa, Iowa.

Funeral Services will be 2:00pm, Monday, June 21, 2010 at the Clinton Chapel Snell-Zornig Funeral Homes and Crematory. Burial will be in the Clinton Lawn Cemetery with military honors being conducted by the Clinton AMVETS Post #28. Visitation will be Monday from 1:00pm to the service time.

James Robert Merritt was born November 22, 1921 in Mt. Vernon, Iowa to Seward N. and Lucile S. Merritt. He married Lucille V. Moeller on December 25, 1952 in Clinton, Iowa.

Mr. Merritt was educated in the Mt. Vernon, Iowa schools where he graduated in 1939. He then attended Cornell College in Mt. Vernon until 1942. At that time he entered the military service as a photographer. While he was in the service he was attached to General Eisenhower's staff as photographer until he was discharged from the military in 1946 in Germany. After his discharge he stayed in Europe with the U. S. Government as a civilian photographer. In 1949 he returned to Clinton and was associated with Hill Studio and Camera for 38 years until 1988. After his retirement he became a life member of the Professional Photographers of America. He was a member of the Clinton Chamber of Commerce and also served as their treasurer in 1975. He helped start the Downtown Association of the Chamber in 1971. He was a member of the American Legion, Post 190 of Clinton serving as the Finance Officer and he was a member of the First Methodist Church of Clinton.

He is survived by one brother, Donald E. Merritt of Decatur, Illinois and one sister, Allene Bys of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Mrs. Merritt died in December 2003.
