(June 22, 1942 - April 7, 2010)

Gene Lewis, 67, McCausland, Iowa, died Wednesday evening, April 7, 2010, at Genesis Medical Center-West Campus, Davenport, following an extended illness.
Leroy Eugene "Gene" Lewis was the second of six children born to Adelbert and Doris (Buskirk) Lewis on June 22, 1942 in Augusta, Illinois. He graduated from Warren High School in rural Monmouth, Illinois. Gene and Jan were married July 5, 1969 in Rock Island, Illinois. Gene was a leasee operator of various Wareco Gas & Convienence stores. His last 30 years were spent at the North Second Street Wareco Station in Clinton.

He was a very civic minded individual, and served his community many capacities. Gene was a councilman for the City of McCausland for ten years and served as mayor for 12 years. He was a Little League coach, served as president of the North Scott Little League and coached PeeWee Baseball for over a decade. Gene was a charter member of the McCausland Jaycee's serving as president. Other then his grandchldren, Gene enjoyed fishing, gardening, Louis Lamour and the St. Louis Cardinals.

Surviving are his loving wife of nearly 41 years, Jan; children, Jim Fletcher, DeForest, Wisconsin, Wendy (Bobby) Whitsitt, Lewistown, Illinois, Juliee (Ricky) Beaver, Buna, Texas, John (Wendy) Fletcher, Stockton, Stephanie (Dick) Main, Knoxville, Illinois, Greg (Jo Lynn) Lewis, East Galesburg, Illinois; twelve grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; mother, Doris Yeakey, McLeansboro, Illinois; mother-in-law, Hazel Ploog, McCausland; brothers, Lowell (Carol) Lewis, Tulsa, Oklahoma, Steve (Mary) Lewis, Salem, Missouri, David (Patty) Lewis, Wichita, Kansas, Mike (Marilyn) Lewis, McLeansboro, Illinois; a sister, Janet Lewis-Zolecki, Lewisburg, West Virginia; many nieces and nephews.

Preceding Gene in death were his father, Adelbert and his step-father, Delbert Yeakey.

The family will greet relatives and friends at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt, from 2:00 until 6:00 p.m. Sunday, April 11, 2010. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, April 12, 2010 in the Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at McCausland Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Pat Determan, Jason Ploog, Chris Shephard, Jeff Ploog, Curt Shephard and Russ McCollam.
