Monmouth-
Abe D. Burwell, son of Jacob and Catherine Snider Burwell was one of the well to do and prosperous farmers of Sharon township, Clinton county, where he was born March 17, 1859. Since early last Spring he had been in poor health. He made a brave fight for life, undergoing two operations in St. Luke’s hospital at Cedar Rapids, where he died October 15, 1918, aged 59 years, 6 months and 28 days. Mr. Burwell passed his boyhood and youth on the farm and acquired his education in the District school of Sharon township. On starting out for himself, he was first engaged in farming in Sioux county, Iowa, for five years, then he moved to Jones county, locating on a farm near his present home, where he continued following agricultural pursuits for one year. From there he removed to Cedar county, where he resided three years. He then took charge of the old homestead in Clinton county, south of Monmouth, where he successfully engaged in farming and stock raising. In 1890 he was married to Mary E. Halley of Jones county, Iowa. To this union were born five children: Alta Swab of Clarence, Iowa; Grace Bacon of Nevada, Iowa; Andy and Clara, at home; and Lillian Logan of Monmouth, Iowa. There are two grandchildren: Belva Mary Swab, two years old and Orland Ray Bacon, nine months old. Mr. Burwell was one of a family of twelve children, seven of whom survive: Ann Greene, Olin, Iowa; William Burwell, Boone, Iowa; Jorn Burwell, Sac City, Iowa; Jane Hopkins, Lorenz, Iowa; Whitmore Burwell of Montana; Ella O’Kelley, Grant’s Pass, Oregon; and Amy Clapp, Cherokee, Iowa.The funeral was held at the Smithtown Church, Friday afternoon, Rev, John Dawson,officiating, assisted by Monmouth singers. Interment was made in the Smithtown Cemetery.
