CLINTON — John C. Stansberry, 85, of Clinton, died Saturday, March 13, 2010, at the Alverno Health Care Facility.

Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, March 18, 2010, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Clinton. Entombment will be in the Clinton Lawn Cemetery Mausoleum. Military honors will be conducted by the Clinton AMVETS Post #28. Serving as pallbearers will be Herman “Chris” Eichmeier, Don Nicolaysen, Douglas Nelson, Larry Dalton, Rodney Alexander and Bruce Kamer. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. to the service time Thursday at the church. The Clinton Chapel Snell-Zornig Funeral Homes and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.

John C. Stansberry was born on October 20, 1924, in West Burlington, Iowa, the son of Max and Edith (Kearns) Stansberry. He married Ruth E. Volckmann on August 24, 1943, in Sacramento, California; she died January 16, 2007.

John was a 1942 graduate of Ottumwa High School. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Army Signal Corps. He served from May 1943 until being discharged on February 2, 1946 as a 1st Sergeant. He received the Asiatic Pacific Ribbon with one star and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one star for his service.

John owned and co-managed the Volckman Furniture and Carpet Company for many years.

John was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Lyons Masonic Lodge #93 and Emulation Masonic Lodge #255, Clinton Scottish Rite Masonic Bodies, a former DeMolay Boy, the Clinton Hi-12 Club, a member of American Legion Post #190, Boy Scout Troop #2, a licensed amateur radio operator for over 60 years, member of the KAABA Shrine, member of the Scottish American Society, the Clinton Historical Society, the Soaring Eagle Nature Center, and was an engineer at KROS before going to the Army Signal Corps.

John is survived by his son, John C. (Peggy) Stansberry of San Marcos, Texas; two daughters, Patricia (Dennis) Woods of Fulton, Illinois, and Carol Lynn (H. David) Petersen of Parkersburg, West Virginia; 6 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren; four brothers, Max Stansberry of Ottawa, Illinois, James Stansberry of Agency, Iowa, Dale Stansberry of Sedalia, Missouri, and David Stansberry of Eldon, Missouri; two sisters, Judith (Milton) Bunce of Des Moines, Iowa, and Margaret (Gerald) Arndt of Des Moines, Iowa, and several nieces and nephews.

John was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, a daughter, one sister, and one brother.

Memorials can be made to the Shriner’s Hospital for Crippled Children or a charity of your choice.
