Maynard was born September 28, 1926, in Freedom Township, Carroll County, Illinois, the son of Harry and Annie (Albrecht) Kehl. He attended Sage School in Freedom Township and later the Radio, Electronic and Television School in Rock Island, Illinois, receiving a degree in 1966. Maynard married Bernice Dinderman on April 18, 1948, in Mount Carroll.

Maynard farmed in the Mount Carroll area and worked as a Journeyman Electrician for Kelly Springfield Tire Company in Freeport, Illinois, retiring in 1991. He also worked at American Air in Morrison, Illinois, and Atwood in Stockton, Illinois. Maynard was a member of the Mount Carroll Church of God, the United Rubber Workers Union, Carroll County Farm Bureau, the National Rifle Association and was a Freedom Township Trustee for eight years.

He could fix anything and if he couldn’t find a part for something, he made it by hand. Maynard invented many gadgets that would make life easier for him.
