CLINTON — Robert "Bob" C. Dannels, 81, of Clinton, formerly of Savanna, IL, died Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2009 at his home surrounded by his loving family. According to his wishes, cremation rites will take place and a graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24th at Savanna Township Cemetery in Savanna. Following the graveside service there will be a Celebration of His Life at the Savanna V.F.W. The Pape Funeral Home in Clinton is assisting the family. Bob was born on Dec. 14, 1927 in Savanna, IL, the youngest child of Joe and Mary (Benz) Dannels. He graduated from Savanna High School with the Class of 1946. Bob proudly served his country in the U.S. Army (1949 - 1951). He was with the 101st Airborne Division during the Korean War from 1950 - 1951. He married Arliss Kness on Dec. 3, 1954 in Savanna, IL; she died in 1990. In his earlier years, he was the crane operator for both Dannel's Bros. Construction Co., a family owned business and Chicago Northwestern Railroad. He and his family moved to California in 1965, where he was a foreman at Continental Can Company in Antioch, CA. They returned to Savanna in 1973 where Bob worked as a master machinist with Northwestern Steel and Wire Company in Sterling, IL; retiring in 1990. Bob was an active lifetime member of the Savanna V.F.W. Post #2223. Some of his favorite times were spent with his family and friends at the "V." He was an avid woodworker, who created works of art that he often gave as gifts and also enjoyed reciting the poetry he wrote. His friendship, humor and wit will be missed by all. Bob is survived by his son, Paul Dannels of Cordova, IL; his daughter, Deena (Greg) Bahr of Clinton; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Paul and Ambrose; and a sister, Ruth.Online condolences may be left at www.papefh.com.Death date: Oct. 7, 2009
