DEWITT — Miss Esther M. Stenzel, 96, DeWitt, died peacefully Saturday morning, September 26, 2009, at Westwing Place, DeWitt. A Service of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, October 3, 2009, in Grace Lutheran Church, DeWitt. The Rev. Timothy J. Carr will officiate with burial at Rossiter Cemetery, Charlotte. Visitation will be an hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials are suggested to Grace Lutheran Church Library or Hospice. Pallbearers will be Gary Penningroth, Joel Hinck, Brad Anderson, Merwyn Scheckel, Daniel Scheckel and Scott Porth. Honorary pallbearers will be Wesley Schroeder, Gordon Schroeder, Rodney Schroeder, Robert Flemming and Ernest Raab Jr. Esther Marie Stenzel was born June 3, 1913, in Charlotte, to Carl and Mary (Paulsen) Stenzel. She grew up in Charlotte and worked at the Charlotte Telephone Company until 1941 when she came to DeWitt and began working at the United Telephone Company. During her career with the telephone offices, she worked as a operator and cashier, retiring as a supervisor. While residing in DeWitt, she roomed at the home of Elmer and Anna Briggs, caring for them until their deaths. Esther was an active member of Grace Lutheran Church, DeWitt, Grace Lutheran Women and the former Esther Circle. She enjoyed a big garden, sharing produce and baked goods with family and neighbors. She was well known in the neighborhood for her immaculate yard. When the very first leaf fell, Esther was out raking. She also loved to embroider pillowcases and towels for gifts. Esther adored her cats, playing board games and reading the newspaper every day. Esther is survived by nephews and nieces, Wesley Schroeder, Clinton, Rodney (JoEllyn) Schroeder, Sarasota, Florida, Gordon (Garnet) Schroeder, Arlene Schmidt and Carole Lueders, Clinton; LaVora (Robert) Fleming, Miles and Ernest (Dorothy) Raab Jr., Iowa City, Fran Schroeder, Loveland, Colorado, and Phyllis (Randy) Meinert, Davenport; adopted family, Merwyn and Joyce Scheckel, DeWitt; special friends, Maribeth (Gary) Penningroth and Bev (Ralph) Johnson, DeWitt. Preceding Esther in death were her parents; sisters, Clara Schroeder, Adelia Raab and Catherine Camp; brothers, Martin, Marius, Carl and Arthur; nephews, Clifton and Orlin Schroeder.
