CLINTON — Glenn J. Carlson, age 88, of Clinton, died Thursday, September 24, 2009, at the Harbor Crest Nursing Home in Fulton. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 P.M. on Monday, September 28, at the Pape Funeral Home in Clinton. Visitation will be from 3:00 to 6:00 P.M. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. Glenn was born in Clinton on May 18, 1921, the son of Anton and Bessie Files Carlson. He graduated from Clinton High School in 1939 and attended the Scovill Business College. He married Doris Peters on August 17, 1945 in Clinton. Glenn was a veteran of W.W. II. He served as an Aviation Radio Man, Airman First Class with the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theater. He was assigned to anti-submarine patrols, reconnaissance and air and sea rescues. Glenn's plane accompanied Navy bombers on strikes against shipping and land targets. He flew 67 combat patrols from bases at Eniwetok and Iwo Jima. Glenn was a Postal Clerk at the Clinton Post Office for over 40 years. He was a member of the First United Methodist, National Association of Retired Federal Employees, American Legion Post 190, Loyal Order of Moose and the Fulton Country Club. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye and Chicago Cub fan. He enjoyed walking, golfing, fishing and bowling. Glenn is survived by his wife Doris; two daughters; Karen Carlson of Clinton and Rita (Craig) Dinsdale of Byron, IL; a son; Richard Carlson of Waverly, IA; six grandchildren; Stacey Carlson, Adrien (Nathan) Kessler, Amanda (James) Taylor, Jaime Dinsdale, Chelsea Dinsdale and Calvin Dinsdale and a great grandson, Carson Richard Kessler. Glenn was preceded in death by his parents, an infant daughter, Nancy Jo, and a brother. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to the Harbor Crest Nursing Home or Genesis Hospice. Online condolences may be left at www.papefh.com.Death date: Sept. 24, 2009
