CLINTON — James Hicks, 86, of Clinton, died Sunday, August 23, 2009, at Genesis Medical Center, West Campus after a courageous battle with cancer. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, August 27, 2009, at the Clinton Chapel Snell-Zornig Funeral Home and Crematory with the Rev. Laura Renault officiating. Burial will be in the Clinton Lawn Cemetery with military honors being conducted by the Clinton AMVETS Post 28. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. James Hicks was born on May 9, 1923, in Boone, Iowa, the son of Harry and Angeline (Zimmerman) Hicks. He married Opal Burmeister on February 1, 1942, in Clinton, Iowa. Jim was a graduate of Clinton High School. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the United States Army. Jim was employed at DuPont for 36 years working as an electrician and a computer programmer until his retirement in 1982. Jim was a member of the Clinton AMVETS Post 28, the Clinton Eagles Club and enjoyed bowling, golfing and fishing. He was an avid Chicago Cub and Iowa Hawkeye fan. Jim is survived by his wife, Opal of Clinton; one daughter, Joyce (Jim) King of Davenport, Iowa; two grandchildren, Kevin (Coni) King and Daneen (John) McFadden; and one great-grandson, Trevor King; one brother, William (Camilla) Hicks of Port Byron, Illinois; two sisters, LaVonne Maresca of El Paso, Texas, and LeRheta (Charles) Fulker of Aberdeen, North Dakota; and several nieces and nephews. Jim was preceded in death by his parents. Memorials can be made to the American Cancer Society.
