NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Bernice L. Byland, 84, of West Mead Place, Nashville, TN, died Saturday, July 25, 2009, at the nursing home. Funeral services will be at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, August 1, 2009, at Spring Valley Reformed Church, Fulton, IL, with Peggy Byland, daughter-in-law, RCA seminarian, officiating. Visitation will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday August 1, 2009, until the time of the service at Spring Valley Reformed Church, Fulton, IL. The Fulton Chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Cremation rites have been accorded. Memorials may be made to Spring Valley Reformed Church and Fisher Center for Alzheimer's Research Foundation.She was born March 04, 1925, in Spring Valley, IL, to Joe J. and Helen B. (Vander Vinne) Bielema. She was a graduate of Morrison High School, Morrison, IL. She married Theodore Byland in Union Grove, IL.During WW II, she was employed as a secretary to the president of Southwest College (now Rhodes College), Memphis, TN. Later she was employed as a realtor in Cleveland, OH. While living in Muskegon, MI, she was a medical receptionist. Upon her return to Cleveland OH, she was employed as an executive secretary for the chief of surgery for a large Cleveland hospital. In Grand Rapids, MI, she managed a private medical practice in the 1980s. She subsequently worked for the chief of medicine at the same hospital. Following her retirement, she moved to Nashville, TN, in 1991. Bernice was an active volunteer in the various churches where her former husband pastored. After retirement, she was a member of the East Brentwood Presbyterian Church, Brentwood, TN. Bernice enjoyed reading, writing letters and traveling. Survivors include three sons, Jody (Peggy) Byland, Fremont, MI, Dr. Jeffrey (Elaine) Byland, Fremont, MI, and Dr. James (Mary) Byland, Brentwood, TN; eight grandchildren, Dr. Mark (Jennifer) Byland, Ellen (Joe) Zupanic, Ann (Ryan) Knudsen; Shawn Byland, Kristine Roughton; Hannah, Audrey and Emma Byland; eight great-grandchildren; and one sister, Arlene (Bernie) Merema of Morrison, IL.
